Admissions

Independent schools run their own admissions. You register directly with the school, usually for a fee, and the school sets its own deadlines, assessments and offer dates, which are separate from the borough process.

Entry points, as published by the school

  • Year 7 (11+)

Three stages: the ISEB online pre-test (taken at St Paul's or the candidate's current school if ISEB-registered; required for all Year 6 11+ candidates), written examinations in English and Mathematics at St Paul's in December for successful pre-test candidates, and in-person interviews for high performers with senior members of staff and the Head. Overseas candidates must attend the written exams in person. Source

  • Year 9 (13+)

Three stages beginning in Year 6: ISEB online pre-test plus a Head Teacher's report on character, academic strengths and interests (decision mid-December); written assessments at St Paul's in early January (Mathematics 75 minutes, English 45 minutes); Saturday interviews in late January/early February assessing numeracy skills, critical analysis of source material and co-curricular interests, while parents attend a talk with the High Master. Outcomes: an offer (conditional on continued progress and conduct), invitation to Year 8 re-assessment in September of Year 8, or no place. Source

  • Sixth form (16+)

Entrance examinations at the beginning of November predominantly based on current GCSE syllabuses, testing analytical skills rather than factual recall; most candidates also sit a numerical problem-solving paper. Interviews at St Paul's on a fixed Saturday in November with subject department heads (no exceptions to date or location); candidates provide written statements on interests and aspirations. Offers conditional on a minimum of eight (I)GCSE passes at grade 7, of which at least six at grade 8 or 9 including the subjects to be studied at A level. Source

  • Year 3 (7+)

Written tests in English (dictation exercise), Mathematics and Reasoning (tasks weighted according to age); candidates performing well advance to a half-day group assessment in groups of approximately 10 comprising a Mathematics lesson, an English lesson and a group problem-solving task, while parents meet the Head of St Paul's Prep School. Results typically within a fortnight of the initial tests. Past papers are not published. Source

  • Year 4 (8+)

Same procedure as 7+: written tests in English (dictation), Mathematics and Reasoning, followed for successful candidates by a half-day group assessment (Mathematics lesson, English lesson, group problem-solving task) in groups of approximately 10. Source
