Admissions

Independent schools run their own admissions. You register directly with the school, usually for a fee, and the school sets its own deadlines, assessments and offer dates, which are separate from the borough process.

Entry points, as published by the school

  • Year 7 (11+)

Single streamlined 11+ pathway: pupils join a Charterhouse prep school (Edgeborough or Windlesham House) for Years 7-8 then transfer seamlessly to Charterhouse at 13+ without further application. All registered candidates sit the ISEB Common Pre-test in the Autumn Term of Year 6, reviewed with a school reference; successful applicants attend an Interview and Activities Assessment (group activities, interviews and a creative-writing task) in the Spring Term of Year 6. One contract and one deposit. Source

  • Year 9 (13+)

13+ is the largest entry point. Year 6/7 pathways: ISEB Common Pre-test in the Autumn Term (online, age-standardised), reviewed with a reference from the current school; successful applicants attend an Interview and Activities Assessment at Charterhouse (group activities, interviews and a creative-writing written assessment) in the Spring Term. Year 8 pathway: remotely invigilated digital tests (possibly plus an EAL test), then an Assessment Day. Offers are conditional on a positive reference for performance and behaviour in Year 8. Source

  • Year 10 (14+) · 20 places

Around 20 new Year 10 pupils are welcomed each year; places are limited. Candidates complete remotely invigilated tests on a digital platform within a set testing window (some may also take an EAL test), then attend an Assessment Day at Charterhouse with group activities, interviews and a creative-writing written assessment; references are requested from the current school. Source

  • Sixth form (16+) · 70 places

Around 70 new pupils join the Sixth Form each year alongside an existing year group of about 180. After registration, a Candidate Form collects the latest school report, predicted (I)GCSE grades, a head's reference contact and proposed subjects. Candidates complete digital tests in literacy, numeracy and reasoning; shortlisted candidates attend an assessment day with an observed seminar, short written exercise and one-to-one interview. As a guide the school expects successful candidates to gain a high proportion of 8s and 9s at (I)GCSE; offers are unconditional but subject choice depends on (I)GCSE grades. Source
